One thing I love about baseball is the way you can pass it on to kids and grandchildren as well. I was in Washington, D.C. today and enjoyed a visit to the new Nationals Park, the home of the Washington Nationals that just opened. Ph_fclub_280x181(This was the second game ever played in the stadium.) At a board meeting of The Institute on Religion and Democracy today Fred Barnes, editor of The Weekly Standard and a Fox New political commentator, with me during lunch. (Fred shares season tickets with several friends.) He asked me if I wanted to go to the game tonight and it took me less than one second to say "Yes." What a glorious evening it was, though it was a bit chilly. We talked about everything from family to faith, and politics to baseball. It is an understatement to say that I had a blast.

Then I got got some lovely pictures of my wife and grandchildren at the home opener of our local minor league team, the Kane County Cougars. It was colder in Chicago but the girls had a blast. One of my first dates with Anita was to a baseball game. I wanted to make sure she could handle my love for this great sport. My daughter got the baseball gene and now my granddaughters have it too.

Where else can you go for such a great time to relax and talk at the same time? The game invites reflection, pauses, cheers and just plain fun.

Seeing Nationals Park means I have now been to 25 of the 30 major league teams home parks. I have San Diego, Kansas City, New York (Shea Stadium), Miami and Tampa to reach all 30. My goal is to do it by next season.

John, I’m stuck back at 18 ballparks, but 8 of those are no longer in use, so I’ve only seen 10 current parks. I’m glad you got to see the DC park. It looks good on TV.
